Picking Hari, 19,20-Dec-2006

Hari returned to India after his 5th semester. His flight (BA) brought him around 1AM on the mid night of 19 and 20.

I had taken 0.5 days leave. I came home with driver Shibi and took Latha and picked Badri from his school. We had taken Honda City since Hari wanted to drive it back. We reached my brother Tirumalai's place by 10PM on 19-Dec-2006. We had set the alarm for 12.15 - but had goofed up. It did not work - may be PM? Anyway, Tirumalai woke us up and we went to the airport. It was amazing to see the traffic police being busy at 12.30 in the night. The flight came around 1.40 or so (some 30 minutes late) and we all came home around 3.30 and had good sleep.

Next day, we went to Sowmee's place where Sudha also had come. In the meanwhile, Latha and I went for some jewelery purchase in Saravanas. Then we went to Sudha's place to see Raghu and Guchu. Then it was B2B.

I am getting impressed with Honda. May be, no reason to change it! On the return, Hari drove from outer Madras until Hosur.

Of course, not to forget the 4 toll gates: Rs 25, Rs 35, Rs 45 and Rs 25 (I think). But we saved on the last two gates, since we bought the return ticket with a very good saving. (Rs 45 * 2 was actually Rs 65, I think).

Another attraction going to Tamilnadu is the savings in Petrol. It is better to fill gas in the interior, since in Hosur, you pay additional (about 30 paise per litre) since they add the transport cost).

Hampi, 23,24,25-Dec-2006

Photos of the trip

You can look at the photos (Caution: All high resolution ones, taken by Hari) at the site: http://in.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/sunsesh/album?.dir=/dd76scd&.src=ph&.tok=phn1QEGB5lm3fN.U

Mental Block

Somehow, Hampi has been dodging us. When a few years back, we tried Mantralaya and Hampi together, we had an issue. Hari developed Chickenpox and we had to rush back. Sriram and his wife Arthi were with us - since we had invited them. After that, somehow, I had a mental block to try North Karnataka.

Ultimatum

When Latha said that she would ensure the falling down of the heavens if I do not organize anything for his US-returned son for the XMAS vacation of three days, I was cornered. I tried all choices including Ooty. No - there was absolutely no hotels available anywhere for Hampi or Ooty. Of course, if one takes the travel, he may find the hotel - but I did not want to take a chance.

Suddenly I had a brainwave. I looked for the nearby places - and lo, in Bellary there was a hotel available. I booked it immediately and had booked a cab in New India travels near my house. So, we were all set. Or, were we?

New India messes up, again

We had the problem last time with New India when we tried to go to Ahobilam. They simply did not have the cab and had us in the tenderhooks till the last minute. I had to cancel it and engage Raghavendra tours. A similar thing happened now. From 6AM through 7.30AM, he kept saying that the car was just coming. I went and told him cancelling the car and then booked Raghavendra - which was Rs 0.25 per km extra - but that was OK. The prestige was at stake, you see.

Actually New India did send the driver (who had come to Chennai earlier with us, I think, Ramesh) - but I had to ask him to go back.

The Raghavendra Driver

We had a fantastic driver, Pradeep who knew Hindi and Kannada. He was exhibiting mixed enthusiasm. In the morning when we started, he was talkative and bubbly. He called his friends (may be his wife) and proudly saying that he was going to Hampi on an assignment that had come up suddenly.

In Chitradurga fort, something seems to have gone wrong. After that he was very serious and also was going very slow (relatively) at 70KM even in Bellary highway. On the last day, he even exhibited impatience in terms of our leaving time, visiting the places on the way etc.

His handling the car was rash - but amazing. He drove well. He claimed that he was getting 22KM per litre. Not sure, if we can believe it.

Hotels

We stayed in Ashoka Comforts on 23rd night, booked earlier. It was an AC room costing about Rs 1,120 (including 8% tax and extra bed). We had ordered for room service too.

Next morning, I decided to try for a hotel in Hampi itself. Ashoka guys assured me that if I did not get any hotel in Hampi, I can come back. But, coming back was really foolish - since Bellary - Hampi route was absolutely horrible and I also suspect that it is really about 100KM and not just 60 / 70 as usually reported.

Fortunately, we managed to get a room in Haripriya hotel for Rs 300. Beautiful!

Highway - inconvenience and convenience

It was surprising to realize that the Bellary highway goes through Andhra control for a few (about 10 KM) - but no problem, the cars (even commercial) can just go through, it looks like.

Places visited

Of course, Hampi was impressive (and Latha would say that Narasimha is more impressive). We did buy a simple book showing the usual places in Hampi - but were unable to locate them all by ourselves. There was no proper guide (surprising!). We went on our own through some places and reached Virupaksha temple. Then we concluded that we cannot get to see the other usual monuments such as Narasimha. Then it turned out that all those are really at a place called Kamalapura - and oh boy, what a visit! We saw almost all places covering them by car itself. These were covered on Dec 24.

On Dec 23, we engaged a guide (Rs 150) and went through the Chitradurga fort. Again impressive - but more impresssive was a guy who was climbing up and down the fort wall - just like a monkey. He was a Tamilian called Jothiraj - but the local guys call him 'Kothi raj' (monkey in Kannada).

On Dec 25, we visited one more Hampi ruin near the lodge, Anantha Sayanam temple. Of course, there were many temples all without Murthys. (Except Virupaksha). Then it was back to Bangalore - and we visited Vani Vilas Sagar near Hiriyur on suggestion from Easwara Rao of RSI, Office. It was not great - but OK. It was a reservoir.

Overall

A satisfying trip. Hari, Badri and Latha came. The decision to stay in Bellary for a night was not prudent (from the distance and money points of view) - but it was a good master stroke, since without that, we could not have gone out for the XMAS leave.

9-Dec-2006 Sowmya and Keshava Perumal Temples before Hassan

Two great temples with amazing facts and idols.

Sowmya Keshava is in Nagamangala. It is also called as Anantha Kshethra. In the 7 tier, Raja Gopuram, Anjaneya appears with loin cloth only. It is a Krishna temple with the beautiful Lakshmi Narasimha sitting in Adisesha. Also, near the main entrance, there is Adiseshan in 'Shanku' in the roof. It is believed that the place removes all Naga related doshas. There are statues for Para Vasudeva, Chakrathalwar for Sowmya Nayaki.

Then we went to Bindiganvile where Channa Keshava Swamy temple is there. It is believed that People in Belur took a wooden Garuda from Kanchi for their place. But, Garuda refused to move from this place. Garuda with his two wives are on the left side to the God. Garuda and Anjaneya are in wood.

On the day we went, there was a family from Bangalore who performed special puja for the god. The family is in Bangalore and the husband is working in Tamilnadu. We had to wait for opening of the door. They invited us to join their lunch. But, I was not sure if there would be enough quantity and hence declined.

We went by Wagon R driven by Shibi. In the evening, Latha found that the left side of the car had a huge dent at the bottom - probably by some two wheeler scratching. It was a new car and I left it for Service and insurance on the next day, a Sunday.

Melkote Visit

8-Oct-2006

We went to Melkote today. I decided to play it safe - and engaged a cab from the nearby New India Travels. Pretty cool! (I mean the trip as well as the weather). The driver Nagaraj was a pleasant guy and could talk in Tamil too. We left at 6.40AM and as usual, circumambulated the 17th Cross Ganapathi temple and were on the way soon. We were in Melkote around 10.15 and went directly to the Narasimha Sannathi.

We went in the Bangalore - Mysore road and took a right turn after Maddur towards Melkote (also called Thirunarayanapuram). (It is really surprising to note that there is a route to Hassan / Sarvanabelehola from here. I thought we had to take a different route for that. Come to think of it, when we went to Sugganahalli the last week, we were surprised to see signs towards Melkote. Should look at a map!). The journey was absolutely fabulous - with some heavy rains now and then and very cool. As Melkote is at an elevation, the hilly path added to the excitement.

We got off the car in the bus stand. Actually, as we were going up the steps (believed to be 400), we saw another place where a bus and a couple of cars were parked almost at the top. But, we could not figure out how to go there in the car. The driver just passed it off saying that the road was not good enough to go up. I suspect if he really knew about it.

As Prahlada took a pilgrimage, he reached this place and Vishnu appeared before him as Narasimha again. There is a place where the Lord's feet are there (actually it is an open window and care is required) and a passage leads from there to a cave (we were told so -we could not see the cave) where Prahlada is supposed to have undertaken a Tapas.

We went to the 'Vimanam' of this very old temple and had a very good view of the town. We had one of the temple employees, Ramiah explaining things to us about the 'Vishnu Paadam' etc. Really a divine experience.

Lord Narasimha was very impresive and having developed a recent affinity for Lord Narasimha, my wife was very thrilled to see the deity. Here the lord is alone and there is no Thayar. Anyway, Prahalada (and probably Dhruva) is something special for him and he did not mind going alone to help him or see him, I guess.

On way down, we had some tender coconut (we forgot to take water bottle with us) and saw a small accident: a boy rolled a few steps. Fortunately, not a major one.

My wife wanted to distribute some sarees to the people asking for alms on the step - but had forgotten to take the bag from the car. Fortunately, she found two old ladies near the ground and quickly took and distributed the sarees to them from the car. (I wonder if they could really use those sarees especially while asking for alms. Something to be verified the next time).

There is a Mutt opposite the Narasimha temple and we had a quick dharshan of the deity. We wanted to see the Saligrama. The person there said Rs 10 first and we were OK. Then he said, Rs 10 per Saligrama and there were 5. We said OK again. But then, he said that it would take time - so we left.

The car took us to the main temple - around 11.30 or so.

Really a 'big' temple. A lot of shilpas are unfortunately had broken arms. We had good dharshan of the main deity (Thiru Narayana) as well as the 'Sella Pillai', the Uthsavar. There is also the 'Beebi Nachiar' (who goes by the name 'Thulukka Nachiar' in South, especially Trichy) at the feet of the Uthsavar, who is supposed to have fallen in love with this beautiful God!

The archaka asked us about our plan for lunch and then gave us the coupons for the free lunch (is there a really free lunch? Seems to be -- but wait.. we did not want it to be free!) in Jeer's ashram just behind the temple.

After a wait of about 45 minutes, we had a simple but a very good lunch. It consisted of rice, a kootu, sambar and butter milk. We were also told that every day they serve 30 (or 32) heads and the coupons are given by the temple archakas. We can opt to participate in it and the expense would be Rs 500 (or more) for just one day or Rs 1100 (or more) for one day every year. Since that day happened to be my son's Hari's birth day (star based), we paid Rs 1,200 and chose Sep 21 as the date.

So, time to return. With a lot of pleasant memories and a feeling of punya earned, we started our journey back. It was again a good trip back - only the driver ended up getting into Mandya town (wow...how many sugar-cane carts).

We were home around 5PM. We totally covered 312 ("oh...oh...your house number, saar") KM and it was Rs 5.25 per km PLUS Rs 150 as driver allowance and some tips.

Let us wait for His next call!

A lot of sites talk about this temple and a web search could yield them. For example, look here that has some very good photographs too.

Sugganahalli Visit

30-Sep-2006:

Main Deity: Lakshmi Narasimha

Speciality: Standing Posture (Rare for Narasimha) – in the same way as he gave dharshan to a rishi.

Today we visited Sugganahalli, another beautiful Perumal koil in Karnataka. We went by Maruthi Car driven by our driver, Shibi. (Interesting episode about Maruthi later).

Address: Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple, Sugganahalli, Kudur Hobli, Magadi Taluk, 91-80-775 1002

Route and timing: We left our home in Malleswaram, Bangalore at 8.20AM and went towards Nelamangala (or Neelamangala) where we took the left turn, NH48 towards Hassan (about 1 hour and 24 KM). Then we reached Solur (1.5 hr and 42KM from home). From Solur, we took a right turn towards Kudur (called as Ku – dhoor). We proceeded beyond Kudur (1 hour 50 min, 53KM from home) to reach Sugganahalli at about 10.40AM, covering a distance of 64 KM.

Temples and Murthys: Lakshmi Narasimha, Amruthavalli. There is also the garden reared by the rishi; there is a rare Chakrathalwar sannathi. The interesting spot is the Sthamba Narasimha, about 2-3 KM away. In the middle of the field – a small building.

Interesting Events in travel: The Maruthi car just stopped on the return journey as we were leaving Kudur. There was a person (my God! I did not even ask for his name!) on a two wheeler who took my driver and left him near a two wheeler mechanic. The mechanic came in his two wheeler along with his friend and my driver. He tried doing several things – and the car would not start. Then he went below the car and tapped certain place – and lo, it was an empty container’s noise. He became thrilled and told us that it was in deed lack of petrol. We were puzzled – though the petrol indicator was behaving erratically, it cannot be an empty tank. Anyway, there was not much choice. The mechanic’s friend took the driver who in turn took Rs 300 for 5 litres of petrol.

Guess what, the car in deed started after adding petrol.

I asked the mechanic for his fee. He said that I could give whatever I felt like. I gave him Rs 100 – and he said that I needed to give him only Rs 50. Real village honesty – we were in deed moved.

With fear in the heart, we started the journey. May be the mileage of the car has reduced to something like 5KM per petrol? Does it mean, can we reach the next pump safely?

God was with us. We reached Solur and located a pump. We wanted to try the full tank and we did not have money for it. Fortunately the pump was accepting Credit Card. I checked with him twice. He confirmed it. He inserted the pump in the tank and started the pump – and it was just 20 sec or so – he had to stop it. It was FULL TANK already. And, he filled petrol only for Rs 140! Oh…oh…what is happening? Was his diagnosis wrong? How could he sense an empty tank?

With thousand questions and zero answers, we proceeded towards Bangalore – and we went on changing our positions. The mechanic was a god send person the first moment. No..no…he did not know his job the next moment.

Second times, Guess what – the car again stopped near Penya. Similar method. In the middle of the peak traffic. Fortunately, there was some space in the side. We moved the car there. There was no mechanic nearby. So, we called our favorite ‘family mechanic’ the Iyengar. He is a very efficient man. Over phone, he collected the details and through a remote diagnosis, suggested what should be done: the fuel pump might have become hot. Cover it with a damp cloth for a few minutes. Then it should start.

We did that. Like the lady who goes around (circumambulate) the peepul tree for a child and then at the end of it, checks if the child has in deed come, we kept trying to see if the car starts. The driver removed the tube feeding into the circular pump and kept sucking petrol through it (the tube) to see if the petrol flow is there. No, there was no flow. Then he found that the end was kind of cut and he trimmed it and then sucked again.

I have a feeling that the tube had some holes and cuts at the feeding point and with running, the tube became hot and the sucking did not have any effect. But, we will know the real picture only with passage of time.

Let us see. Till date, it is running OK.

An ideal world

Bangalore police have given an ultimatum that the cars in Bangalore (resident or transfer throughs) should not have tinted / filmed glass windows any more. It is because that certain undesirable people cover themselves behind those making life miserable for the Police. No more opaque glass!

How true - and how sweet. Surely, we are heading to an ideal world - where there would be no work for the police.

Actually it is not a bad idea. Let us see. No people should wear opaque dress - since they may hide things below the dress. (And the Security cousins in the airport will thank our police: their job is also simplified. Not to mention the increased demand that job would have - since you can officially do 'bird watching'.)

And, of course, the houses cannot have opaque walls. And this will also reduce stone throwing - since from the glass houses, you are not expected to throw stones.

Let us welcome Ram Rajya soon.

Outsourcing this....

This is the time of outsourcing. Last Christmas, there was a joke where Santa was outsourced to a Bangalorean. Then recently there was a joke where somebody was begging with a board,"for New Orleans" and somebody was remarking that the collection was being outsourced. Recently my son who is doing his studies in US had a neat arrangement for waking him up. He has outsourced it to his mother. Never mind, the need for me to pick up the phone expense.

Any weight reduction program for this?

Again, if you are a person who uses the weighing machine more than the Tread mill (checking the weighing machine with expectation after 2.5 min usage of tread mill), sorry, this blog is not meant for you. If the lift that got stuck gets cleared when you get into that and if you think this blog will help you fly in air by yourself, sorry, this is not meant for you.

In early days, there used to be stories and essays on south Indians going to Delhi and the associated issues. Now we are advanced - and we talk of USA. But the basic issues remain the same.

My son who is doing his BS in US is just preparing to leave after his vacation. And, he is desperately looking for a weight reduction program. And of course, he is thanking his stars that he is doing his studies in US rather than in UK or Europe, since the weight would have caused him more problems. No...no.. he did not get the weight due to chips. He in fact got the weight from 4 women.

The first woman was of course his mother. May be, she wanted to compensate for whatever he missed in her preparations for the past one year (do not ask if it is a blessing or a curse - and do not tell her that I asked you not to ask!). So, quite a load came from her - all relating to food items - most of them exuding her love of course.

The second and third woman were related and there was kind of a competition between them too. They happened to be the respective mothers of a couple known to my son in US. One wanted to make sure that my son carried some special items for her son and wanted to make more sure that the other person does not load my son too much! The other wanted my son to carry a mini cupboard and mini eatery. My son (ably assisted by his mother) politely said that he had more space in his heart for the US couple than in the suitcase and hence had to cut down certain things.

The fourth woman actually learnt a skill when she came to give my son a few items to be posted (US Mail – do not think of a blog posting – we are too much technologized!) in US. She brought kind of a mini suit case and my wife (who has a PhD in packing – she does it successfully with us human beings as well as items when we travel) removed the items and beautifully put them all in a bigger envelope. The visitor’s amazement was evident in her eyes. No, unfortunately, my wife did not charge anything for this training.

So, now, you see, my son has to carry these things and he is looking if anybody is offering a weight reduction program.

Just a secret I am going to share with you: if he has problems, I am going to offer a program to him: I will take away the eatery part! I do have over weight problem – but then, I do 2.5 minutes of tread mill every day, anyway.
